Description

The City of Davis Parks & Community Services Adaptive Recreation program provides support and supervision to adults (ages 21- 70) and teens (ages 13-21) with disabilities for recreational activities including bowling, dances, trips, sporting events, movies, game nights, socials, virtual activities and more. Support includes, but is not limited to; leading group activities, facilitating socialization, safety, behavioral conduct, communication, transportation, money management and self-help skill reminders.

Applicants must be energetic, enthusiastic, patient and flexible. Must have an interest in working with community members with disabilities in recreation settings. Adaptive Recreation Leaders must recognize the capability of all participants. All applicants must have the ability to communicate effectively with program participants, parents and co-workers.


Hours vary and are predominantly on weeknights and weekends after 3:30p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Friday or Saturdays. Must be available to work on the weekends. Schedules vary and are developed on a monthly/ seasonal basis.

Community Services Specialist I, II, III – $16.55-$18.27 per hour based upon experience.

Temporary Part Time. No Benefits. Applicants are screened according to experience relevant to this position. The most qualified applicants are invited to attend Individual or small group interviews.

Examples of Duties

Duties:

  • Responsible for executing and facilitating events, activities and trips for adults with developmental/intellectual disabilities is pre-established activities, events and outings
  • Setting up, running and cleanup of facilities for activities and programming
  • Ability to lead, engage and create a social, fun and active environment.
  • Ability to provide instruction, behavioral management and support in community settings
  • Build rapport and connection with participants, their families and the community
  • Applicants must be energetic, enthusiastic, patient and flexible
  • Facilitates communication, friendships and social opportunities
  • Provides transportation using City of Davis vehicles (6 passenger vans) on outings
  • Assists supervisor in coordinating safe, fun and appropriate activities both virtual and in person
  • Work independently and safely supervise a group of 10 or more.
  • Keeps work environments, facilities and equipment clean, organized and properly stored
  • Communicates with supervisory program staff regarding participant behavior, injuries, accommodation plans and other relevant matters
  • Attends staff meetings as scheduled

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Must have a valid California Class C driver's license and be comfortable to drive City vehicles.
  • Ability to transport oneself to and from different facilities and work sites that events take place at.
  • Availability during weeknights and weekends. Events are Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and occasional Sunday
  • CPR and First Aid Certification prior to the start of employment
  • Ability to demonstrate energy, enthusiasm, and creativity in the job position
  • Having knowledge of recreation activities, behavior management practices and community resources is desirable
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with other program staff and community members
  • Having related experience working with teen/adults with disabilities is highly desirable
  • Ability and desire to advocate for individuals with disabilities to promote social inclusion.

Experience and Training:

  • Community Services Specialist I is an entry-level position, but having some experience with I/DD is desirable.
  • Community Services Specialist II is an entry-level position, but requires a minimum of one year of experience working in the recreational field with or without disabilities or similar setting. Additional education or comparable work experience may be substituted for a portion of the required work experience.


Physical/Sensory Requirements:
Staff should be prepared to work outdoors, in various environmental conditions each week. Staff are required to wear a mask and should be prepared to demonstrate physical distancing standards in line with current guidelines and requirements to keep all staff and participants safe. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, pollens and slip hazards when near water. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid.
