Major Duties
- Assists with event setup/teardown at the Dothan Civic Center, Dothan Opera House, Porter Park Events Plaza, Roy Driggers Building, and other assigned facilities, including arranging and removing chairs, tables, staging, trade show booths, and other equipment.
- Returns facilities to normal status following events, ensuring they are clean, safe, and ready for the next use.
- Attends assigned events to provide operational and custodial support as needed.
- Empties and cleans waste receptacles; replaces liners as required.
- Cleans, disinfects, and sanitizes restrooms; restocks restroom supplies.
- Cleans lobby areas, steps, stairwells, and portico entrances.
- Sweeps, mops, waxes, and vacuums floors throughout assigned facilities.
- Stocks janitorial supply closets and assists with ordering supplies as needed.
- Dusts and polishes furniture, blinds, windowsills, and other surfaces.
- Cleans glass, mirrors, and windows in public and backstage areas.
- Sweeps and cleans sidewalks, parking lots, and landscaped areas, removing debris and trash.
- Assists with raising and lowering flags at assigned facilities.
- Replaces ceiling and floor tiles as needed.
- Repairs small holes in walls and arena floor; repaints as needed.
- Replaces lightbulbs and ensures proper lighting in all assigned areas.
- Maintains cleaning equipment, tools, and supplies to ensure proper working condition.
- Inspects facilities regularly and reports needed repairs and/or maintenance to appropriate personnel.
- Opens, secures, and prepares facilities for daily operations and events as directed.
- Drives to pick up supplies and transports equipment to off-site locations as directed.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of city safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the use of various cleaning chemicals.
- Knowledge in the use of personal protective equipment.
- Knowledge of event preparation policies and procedures.
- Skill in the use of hand tools and power tools.
- Skill in operating equipment as vacuum cleaners, floor fans, blowers, floor scrubbers, carpet cleaners, brooms, mops, etc.
- Skill in prioritizing work.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently after instructions are provided.
- Ability to follow a checklist of specific duties to perform each day.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Arena Operations Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The Arena Operations Manager spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include supervisory instructions and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related custodial and event preparation duties. The variety of duties to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to assist with cleaning and setting up events and custodial duties within department facilities. Successful performance contributes to the provision of clean, safe, and attractive facilities and to the success of programs and events.
- Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city employees, promoters, vendors, and the public.
- Contacts are typically to provide services and resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee regularly lifts objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, occasionally lifts objects weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
- The work is typically performed in city buildings. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, personal protection equipment, ponchos, haz-mat suits, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and
- Six (6) months recent work experience in related work (such as stagehand, truck loading, maintenance, construction, or related work).
- Six (6) months recent experience using hand tools and materials used for auditorium/arena maintenance and repair work preferred.
- Recent [within one (1) year] satisfactory experience with the Performing Arts department as an Occasional/Sporadic Worker performing work such as stagehand, truck loading, maintenance, construction, or related work preferred.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid operator driver’s license and an acceptable driving record (PBA 09/10/01).
- Employees may work irregular hours, evenings, holidays, overnights, and weekends.
- Must comply with department dress code, including closed-toe shoes with non-skid soles when necessary.
- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
- Employees are required submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12)
- Must meet the City of Dothan’s employment physical standards, which include drug/alcohol testing.
