Job Description And Duties

Under general direction from the Caltrans Electrical Superintendent and general supervision from the Caltrans Electrical Supervisor and/or from an Electrician II lead person, the incumbent is responsible for the Levels of Service on Electrical inventory items in the District. Follows safety and health policies and procedures as contained in the Department’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program; knowledge of environmental, storm water, emergencies, natural disasters, accident prevention techniques, and safe work practices. There are times when the incumbent may work for other Supervisors and/or work units, as required by operational needs. Follows and enforces CAL/OSHA and safety rules and regulations; the National Electric Code and the District Maintenance Code of Safe Practices. Employee may receive training from other employees of the crew, region, district or headquarters. The incumbent is responsible for the proper maintenance/operation of assigned equipment.

Working Conditions

Position located at 7300 E. Bandini Bl, Commerce CA 90040, Los Angeles County; Night Shift.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

Required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to 30 degrees, strong winds, rain, dust, noise and uneven surfaces.

May be requested to work overtime due to emergencies, special work projects, or when the Department deems that it is in the best interest of the State to work overtime with proper advance notice.

Employees are expected to report to work reasonably dressed to protect themselves and during routine assignments and from exposure to usual and/or predictable physical and environmental conditions found in the workplace (per Caltrans Safety Manual).

Personal Safety Requirements Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Appropriate footwear, in adequate condition.
  • Long or short sleeve shirts provided by Caltrans. Safety vest is to be worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
  • Long pants; no shorts or cutoffs.
  • Safety gear such as: hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, FR rated clothing, face shields, gloves, respirator, chaps, and/or other safety gear.
  • Reflective vest worn over white coveralls, as needed, such as for night work.

This position requires visual and color acuity adequate to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, willingness to work at odd hours, be available for day or night calls, stay abreast of current technological changes in the fields of electricity and electronics, work up to 550 feet above pavement or water, work in the midst of traffic, and have the ability to withstand working under adverse (e.g., cold, wet, windy) weather conditions.

Desirable Qualifications

The employee will be primarily based in a District 7 office in a climate-controlled environment under artificial lights, but some duties and time will be spent outdoors engaged in the duties mentioned above. Weather conditions vary from a cold, windy and wet winter climate to a very hot and dry summer climate. May be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, hot materials, chemicals, loud noises, inclement weather, steep, uneven and/or unstable terrain, fast moving traffic, and/or extreme temperatures. May be required to sit, stand, squat, kneel, or all the above for long periods of time. May be exposed/put in stressful situations. Will be required to wear long pants and appropriate footwear in good condition and must wear provided personal protective safety equipment including, but not limited to: shirts and/or vests, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, face shields, respirators, ear plugs, as well as other safety devices deemed necessary. The incumbent will be required to travel throughout the District and may be required to travel to other parts of the State. Employees may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays; alternate work schedules/irregular shifts and required to respond to emergency situations and calls.
