Care Assistant caring for older people in a nursing home setting

Portumna Retirement Village consists of a sixty-three-bed nursing home located in Portumna in Co Galway.

The nursing home was opened in December 2007 and has consistently been recognised by HIQA as providing its residents with excellent care. Please see the HIQA website for the most recent report .

The role of the care assistant involves assisting our elderly residents with all aspects of daily living, including, washing, dressing, mobilising, toileting, and eating, as well as contributing to the fun things they do during the day.

We are currently recruiting for both day-time and night-time workers, both part time and full time. You are asked to please specify in your application if you have a preference.

Candidates must be committed to their role and be able to communicate effectively with residents and colleagues.

Preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience/qualifications but recognition will be given to those that are currently undergoing a course of study or those that have experience of working in a care environment.

The experience of candidates that may have cared for elderly relatives will also be recognised.

A QQI Level 5 in Care for the Older Person and Care Skills is desirable but not essential. Support will be given to successful candidates to obtain the qualification in early course.

Please note, - applicants are asked to ensure that they live within a reasonable commuting distance of Portumna before applying. This is defined as living within a thirty minute car journey. If this is not the case, then the applicant is asked to please clarify their circumstances as consideration will not be given to applications from candidates that provide no explanation as to how they would plan to work in Portumna but live more than thirty minutes away.

This opportunity is not suitable for someone that would require a work permit or sponsorship to work in Ireland as a near immediate start is required.

Variable shifts apply. Successful candidates will be rostered to work various daytime 6hr and 12hr shifts, and 12hr night time shifts between Monday and Sunday. Candidates must be prepared to work shifts on any day of the week. Full time weekly hours are 36 to 48 hours per week.
