Job Summary

Learn, train, and become efficient as a dispatcher for Police, Fire. EMS and other University departments for the Purdue West Lafayette and Purdue Northwest campuses. Dispatchers are responsible for receiving and prioritizing information and requests for police, fire, medical, or university services assistance and to disseminate the information or requests efficiently and appropriately. Dispatchers retrieve, process, and enter sensitive and confidential information from multiple electronic sources and therefore are responsible for maintaining professional standards of confidentiality to meet security regulations. This position requires the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and to complete them correctly and efficiently. Dispatchers must have effective oral and written communication skills as well as excellent listening skills to handle requests for service from phone calls, coworkers, and the general public. Dispatchers also serve as a back-up emergency services activator for other agencies and are responsible for activating the Purdue University emergency Alert notifications. Overtime is necessary.

What We're Looking For

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • 0-2 years of emergency dispatcher experience

Skills

  • Must have demonstrated consistent use of good judgment
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information, always use discretion and work effectively under stressful situations
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must act in a professional manner with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy as needed to provide support to a diverse work group and customer base
  • Excellent listening and comprehension skills
  • Must be able to be assertive when needed
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multi-task several job responsibilities at one time
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Must be able to obtain and hold certifications in Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS), the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Criminal Justice Information Security Regulations (CJIS) and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Cognitive map reading ability, and ability to perform multiple tasks in a proficient manner
  • Must have a good working knowledge and a high level of proficiency with Windows based operations such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Must be able to type with a high level of accuracy
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally

Nice To Have

  • Prior knowledge of Police Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS) systems

What We'd Like You To Know

  • This is a night shift position with hours being 6:00 pm - 6:00 am
  • Testing will be Saturday, July 19th beginning at 9 am.
