In this role, you'll:
Working as part of a dedicated team maintaining the iconic XPT regional train fleet, you’ll play a hands-on role inspecting, servicing, and overhauling pneumatic and diesel systems to keep these high-performance trains running safely and efficiently.
This role will see you conducting everything from daily trip service inspections and pre-start checks across the length of the train, through to heavy maintenance activities such as major overhauls, bogie changes, air compressor replacements, and routine oil and filter changes. You’ll also have the opportunity to work in varied environments – from the Sydenham maintenance centre to remote locations across NSW depending on the location of the train.
You will contribute to keeping our passenger services safe and reliable by diagnosing and rectifying faults, carrying out functional tests, and ensuring all mechanical and pneumatic systems are operating at peak performance.
In this dynamic 24/7 operation, you’ll work as part of a team to support our network and as such will be required to work a 12-hour rotating roster - day shift, night shift, weekend work and overtime. Please note, the advertised pay rate does not reflect / include penalties and allowances incurred with a 24/7 rotating shift roster.

About you
You're a qualified Fitter possessing a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Fitting/Machining). Your mechanical trade skills and hands-on experience with pneumatic or diesel systems – whether developed through an apprenticeship, rail maintenance, heavy vehicles, or related industries – will see you excel in tackling complex inspections, problem-solving under time pressures, and meeting service schedules without compromising safety or quality.
You’re recognised for your strong work ethic, mechanical aptitude, and ability to collaborate effectively across multiple trades. You bring a commitment to precision and a focus on safety that ensures the XPT fleet is ready for every journey.
