Riverside is seeking a skilled laborer to travel with its portable asphalt plant supporting paving operations on road construction projects throughout Montana and Wyoming.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our construction season runs approximately April-November. This position is full-time and seasonal with the potential for work to continue in the off-season to meet maintenance needs. The hot plant laborer is responsible for supporting the asphalt production process as part of a team that travels wherever the hot plant is needed for asphalt paving.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
- Participate in the setup and teardown of the asphalt hot plant as it is relocated from site to site
- Participate in the coordination of the plant relocation as it is transported
- Aid in the production of hot asphalt mix which includes:
- communication with the plant operator as to how the plant and equipment are operating during production
- adjusting controls to regulate the flow of materials
- maintaining the production equipment while ensuring the efficient working condition of the plant
- Perform walk-around and site inspections for all equipment to ensure proper maintenance with safe, clean, and operational equipment
- Perform servicing and maintenance of equipment; refer major problems to the hot plant manager
- Troubleshoot, problem solve, and successfully discuss production issues with plant operators and supervisors
- Safely handle hot asphalt oil,
- Operate heavy equipment such as a front end loader or skid steer if necessary
- Use hand tools such as but not limited to: hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, torches, welders, and hand shovels as required to assist in the operation or maintenance of plant
- Perform general labor duties
- Learn and understand plant operation and maintenance with an uncompromising focus on safety by properly following company policies and MSHA, DOT, and DEQ
- Perform work in outdoor environments which may include exposure to extreme temperatures
LOCATION
Extensive travel is expected throughout MT & WY as jobs are often in remote locations. Employees are generally responsible for their own travel expenses, but, whenever possible, we do offer dry camping in gravel pits near jobsites to reduce the cost of living and working on the road.
WAGE & BENEFITS
$30.19 - $36.67/hour *rates may fluctuate slightly from job to job based on Davis-Bacon requirements*
Hourly rate negotiable and TBD during off-season for winter maintenance

- Pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings
- Basic electrical knowledge is preferred
- Strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with other employees is critical
- Able to handle several projects at once while maintaining deadlines
- Demonstrate excellent safety awareness and willingness to comply with company policies and safety standards
- Able to drive to and from various plant locations as needed
- Able to be flexible with last minute schedule, location, and shift-time changes
- Able to comply with PPE requirements: safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image
- Continuous mental and visual attention span to safely and effectively complete work tasks
- Project a positive and cooperative attitude by maintaining courteous and professional conduct with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public
- Willing to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required
- Able to walk, stand, sit, shovel, sweep, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, and work on elevated platforms, possibly for extended periods
- Able to work at heights up to 70 feet with special PPE to perform maintenance or repair to plant components (ex: silo, drag slats, traverse, bag house, elevators, batch towers, drum/mixer, conveyors) utilizing ladders, stairs, man lifts, and catwalks
- Move/lift up to 85 pounds on occasion
- Be self-motivated and require minimal supervision
- Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards,
- Be able to adapt and work in extreme weather temperatures
- A valid driver’s license required; a commercial driver’s license is preferred
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must have reliable transportation and the ability to travel. Periodic evenings, nights, weekends, and overtime hours are expected. Plant sites move approximately every 4-8 weeks, and it is expected that employees will provide their own housing. Many employees choose to stay near the site in camper trailers. All costs involved with housing are the responsibility of the employee.
