Description of Work

Protect the Heart of North Carolina- Join the NC State Capitol Police and Serve with Pride, Integrity, and Purpose.

This job classification qualifies for the employee referral bonus program. If you were referred to this job posting by a current NC State Capitol Police or NC State Highway Patrol employee, and you are eventually hired, that employee could qualify for a referral bonus.

This is a continuous posting and may not reflect a current vacancy. However, your application will be retained and considered active for 180 days. Only one application may be submitted during that time.

Maintain physical security of all state buildings and grounds. Respond to calls for service including fire alarms, intrusion alarms, bomb threats or need for emergency medical services from State Capitol Police Communications Center and reports to incident scenes. Investigate suspicious persons/activities reported by state employees or visitors. Orders state employees to clear buildings when advised of fire or bomb threats to safeguard life of employees/visitors. Enforces state laws and regulations within jurisdictional boundaries and responds to calls for assistance in the state government complex. Investigates criminal offenses involving state property, state employees, or visitors to state property. Interviews persons to obtain information pertaining to crime scene.

Checks buildings during non-working hours and at night to ensure security of property and equipment, checking to detect unlocked doors or windows. Writes reports of activities occurring during shift for management use for reporting purposes and planning. Completes investigative reports pertaining to criminal acts reports in or around state buildings and property, and interviews with victims and witnesses. Arrests subjects in connection with crimes or violations of laws. Completes all documents associated with day-to-day operations.

Testifies in court to assist in resolution of cases involving crimes against the State and state employees/visitors in which the officer becomes involved in during the performance of his/her duties. Provides escort for visiting dignitaries as required. Provides security escort for persons transporting currency. Issues citations for violations of motor vehicle laws. Testifies in court in traffic cases and criminal prosecution to assist in resolution of crimes committed in around state buildings or property. Directs and reroutes traffic around fire and other disturbances. Provides information and assistance to visitors and stranded motorists.

Note for Applicants who have Not Completed Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) in North Carolina:

If you are selected for this job and do not currently possess BLET certification, North Carolina State Capitol Police will sponsor (cover the cost) of your six-month BLET training, and you will be earning a salary while completing training. During this training period, you will be entered into the Teachers & State Employees Retirement System (TSERS). BLET certification must be obtained within one year of the date of hire. Upon successful completion of BLET, you would be enrolled into the Law Enforcement Officers Retirement System. Please see this link for more information on the BLET process and requirements, including if you are certified as a law enforcement officer in another state.

State Capitol Police uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.

The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma. Necessary Special Qualifications

  • Must complete all requirements for an NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification, including completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training, in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission within one year of employment.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid NC Driver's License.
