What You Will Do

As an Apprentice Operator I in the Bureau of Utilities, you will assist in the operation and maintenance of water treatment systems and facilities. Working under the direction of a supervisor, you will perform inspections and provide general maintenance. The work you do will support safe and efficient operations in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Essential Duties

  • Operate and monitor water treatment systems and facilities to ensure public safety and efficient performance.
  • Perform inspections and provide general maintenance of water treatment systems and facilities. Evaluate inconsistencies and report problems to supervisor.
  • Operate specialized equipment as required.
  • Maintain facilities, equipment and tools.
  • Collect samples, compile data, and complete routine paperwork, including logs and reports.
  • Follow all established safety rules and regulations. Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment.
  • Complete assigned work in a timely fashion. Accept feedback.
  • Demonstrate an ability to collaborate and a willingness to learn. Participate in a supportive work environment.
  • Exhibit integrity, ethics, and fiscal responsibility.

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
  • Up to one year of related experience
  • A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid driver's license
  • Must apply for a Maryland Temporary Operator Class 4 Water Treatment Plant license within 30 days of hire date.

Additional Information

  • Work schedule includes weekends and holidays. Permanent night shift includes overnight hours, weekends and holidays.
  • May be required to work outside of standard hours.
  • May be identified as Essential Personnel during emergency situations.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure to potentially adverse environmental conditions, including, but not limited to, chemicals, noise, and airborne particles.
  • Frequent physical activity: standing/walking, pushing/pulling, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying, climbing steps, squatting, stooping, and related activities.
  • Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
